First Project Picture of RAAP
Reseach in Action
Students in this seminar work with each other and community partners on projects that contribute to the vitality and well-being of the New River Valley of Virginia. Students acquire research skills and present their findings to public audiences such as the Appalachian Regional Commission in Washington, DC.
In the Fall 2024 class, students will participate as co-researchers in Monuments Across Appalachian Virginia (MAAV) to help develop a monument that encourages racial justice, social well-being, and economic development in Franklin County, VA.
Appalachian Community Research Projects
Students conducted research on challenges and opportunities for substance use disorder (SUD) recovery in Southwest Virginia during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Partnering with Virginia Rural Health Association, students conducted research on recovery-to-work programming needs and opportunities for people with substance use disorder in Southwest Virginia.
Students conducted surveys and interviews to better understand community concerns about the Radford Army Ammunition Plant and drew upon Virginia Tech faculty studies and other research to assess risk and make recommendations.
