Recovery During a Crisis Project Findings

Interviewee Demongraphics

Thirteen semi-structured interviews were conducted online via Zoom to learn how COVID-19 impacted those in recovery from SUDs. Interview participants included eight individuals in recovery, two individuals aiding persons in recovery, two individuals in recovery who also were aiding in recovery, and one individual in the criminal legal system.

Results from the interviews showed that a majority of the participants noted that COVID-19 had impacted their recovery. Unexpectedly, multiple participants noted that there were some positive effects to recovery because of COVID, especially through the use of technology to access recovery resources. It is also important to recognize that effects on recovery that may be positive for one individual have the potential to be negative for another; there is no one-size-fits-all way to acknowledge the ways in which COVID has impacted those in recovery.
